From Devastation to Change: Lessons Learned from the El Paso, Texas Mass Shooting
On August 3, 2019, a gunman shot and killed 22 people and injured 24 others in a mass shooting at a Walmart store in El Paso, Texas. As a result of this devastating tragedy, two trauma centers in El Paso received the victims from the shooting. Please join the ATS and New Mexico Department of Health and Emergency Preparedness for a special live panel discussion taking place at the New Mexico Partners in Preparedness Conference. Trauma surgeons and trauma coordinators from both UMC El Paso, a Level I Trauma Center, and Del Sol Medical Center, a Level II Trauma Center, will provide a detailed breakdown of the clinical response to a mass casualty event in their community. Presenters will discuss lessons learned and how emergency preparedness impacted their response to this event. Trauma registry professionals will also discuss how they approached tracking and reviewing the cases from a trauma registry perspective.

Presenters:
Erica Bergeron, CSTR, RHIT, is a Trauma Registry Professional at University Medical Center of El Paso. Erica has been a trauma registrar for two ACS Level I on-site re-verification surveys and now experiencing her third. Erica is the lead in running trauma registry bi-weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual reports to improve data abstraction quality & patient care. Erica’s trauma registry expertise has been further enhanced by participating in several academic research report requests of the trauma registry and data entry variables. Erica is familiar with State and National requirements for successful trauma programs.
Valeria Blair is the new Trauma Administrative Director for the Las Palmas Del Sol Market in El Paso, Texas. At the time of the event, she was the Trauma Program Manager of Del Sol Medical, the Level II Trauma Center for the LPDS Market. Valeria pursed a nursing career, graduating with her Associates of Applied Science in Nursing in 2004 and her BSN in 2014. She also has her certification in emergency room nursing and pediatric emergency room nursing.Over the course of the last 16 years, Valeria has acquired a broad range of experience in trauma care in her various roles from an Emergency Room Tech to staff and charge nurse positions primarily in ED, but also ICU, Med-Surge and Women’s Services caring for all ages from pediatrics to geriatrics. Her leadership experience as a charge nurse in various hospitals and units, as well as 2 ½ years as a nursing supervisor, helped prepare her in becoming the Trauma Program Manager of Del Sol Medical in Jan 2017. In this role, she worked with her TMD to lead the hospital to a zero deficiency ACS survey in the fall of 2017.
Sandra Gonzalez, MSN, RN, TCRN, is the Trauma Program Director at University Medical Center of El Paso, a level one trauma center treating adult and pediatric populations. Sandra is a graduate from the University of Texas at El Paso and New Mexico State University. Sandra’s nursing clinical background is predominantly in critical care and was first recruited to work in the trauma program in 2006 concentrating efforts on expanding neuroscience services. Sandra became the trauma program director in 2011 and loves the ups and downs that come with it. Sandra is an ATCN and TNCC instructor and has attended multiple disaster preparedness conferences. Sandra is also a trauma state surveyor for the State of New Mexico and is currently serving as chair-elect for Border RAC, trauma service area I in the state of Texas.
Alan H. Tyroch, M.D., F.A.C.S., F.C.C.M. is the Professor & Founding Chair of Surgery at Paul L. Foster School of Medicine Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso. Dr. Tyroch also services as the Trauma Medical Director at University Medical Center of El Paso, the region’s only level one trauma center. Dr. Tyroch started his career as a medical laboratory technologist before pursuing his undergraduate degree and graduating with his Bachelor of Science in Microbiology from Texas A&M University. Dr. Tyroch continued his studies as a medical student graduating from the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. He completed an internship in general surgery at Baylor College of Medicine at Houston and his additional residency program at Phoenix Integrated Surgical Residency Program in Phoenix, Arizona. Dr. Tyroch continued his postgraduate training and completed his trauma and surgical critical care fellowship from the University of California San Francisco, Fresno Campus in California. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Surgery and Surgical Critical Care.Dr. Tyroch has many professional memberships and countless publications. He serves in the Texas Department of State Health Services Emergency Medical Service and Trauma Advisory Council (GETAC) appointed by Governor Perry and Governor Abbott. He is currently the Vice-Chair of Council for GETAC. During the course of his professional career, Dr. Tyroch is very active at Paul L. Foster School of Medicine, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso as the Founding Chair of the Department of Surgery and as the interim chair for the Department of Orthopedic Surgery and Rehabilitation.
