The U.S. has relied on blood to support battlefield care during every major conflict since the Civil War. Requirements for blood products during wartime and peacetime led to the creation of the Armed Services Blood Program, securing a readiness posture to support wounded service members, anywhere and at any time. Current readiness for robust blood support requires innovation, research, and development to match the unique challenges we face in today’s global landscape. This presentation will provide a historical perspective of blood on the battlefield and how the Armed Services Blood Program is mitigating the current challenges of peacetime and wartime.
