Advocating for injury prevention topics can be intimidating until you reframe it as educating law makers. This is a tactic to take the advocacy bull by the horns! Learn from a panel of experts who support advocacy at a variety of levels, local, state, and nationally.

Mary Ann Contreras, RN is the Violence and Injury Prevention Manager at JPS Hospital, a busy Level One Trauma Center in Fort Worth Texas. She has practiced nursing over four decades. Mary Ann focuses on trauma, behavior, environment, and policy to develop, implement and evaluate injury prevention initiatives. Using national, local, and trauma registry data, she coordinates and collaborates with community organizations to develop trauma education and injury prevention strategies. She is active in the state’s trauma system, national nursing and injury prevention organizations and sits on several community boards.
Grace Dobbertin has a nursing background and is the injury prevention coordinator at a Level II Trauma Center in the North Denver Metro area. Upon starting this role in 2021, she became interested in upstream injury prevention efforts through advocacy work and completed the Safe States Policy Fellowship in the 2021-2022 cohort. Grace currently serves on the TCAA Advocacy Committee and is pursuing her MPH degree at the Colorado School of Public Health.
Paul Bonta is a consultant working in the areas of public health and health care policy for the Safe States Alliance. He is responsible for strengthening the government affairs activities of non-profit membership associations, while promoting and advancing his clients’ legislative and advocacy agendas in the executive and legislative branches of government. Additionally, Mr. Bonta leads new policy development activities for his clients and collaborates with likeminded stakeholder organizations to advance their respective missions. Mr. Bonta began his career in health policy as a staff member in the U.S. House of Representatives. After a four-year stint on Capitol Hill, he joined the private sector.
