For over 40 years medical professionals in both in and outside of the hospital have relied on the Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) as a reliable and objective neurological assessment tool. In the 2014 updates, clarifications were made to how we score “eye opening” and “verbal response” and more recently a “pupil reactivity score” was added. With these changes comes not only the impact to those performing the assessment, but the proper documentation, coding and entering into trauma registries. Important to our trauma registrars and the centers they work at is that the American College of Surgeons Trauma Quality Improvement Program (TQIP) and National Trauma Data Bank (NTDB) has begun acceptingGCS 40 data with the2019National Trauma Data Standard (NTDS).
